Abstract

Purpose: The study aimed to identify the effects of the CBR programme on
parents of children with Cerebral Palsy, living in Karnataka State, India. It
also tried to find the challenges and improvements needed to make the CBR
programme more effective.

Method: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used to collect a sample
of 100 parents of children with Cerebral Palsy, with GMFCS levels IV and V.
The sample was drawn from various communities in Bangalore, Davanagere
and Bijapur, where the services of The Association of People with Disability are
available. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the study subjects. Data
was analysed by SPSS using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results: It was observed that the CBR programme had a positive effect on
parents’ health, knowledge, social lives and empowerment. A binary logistic
regression was done to find the relationship between health, knowledge, social
lives and assistive devices use. A strong association was found between all the
areas (p=.001) except GMFCS and assistive devices use (p=.004) at 95% CI. The
odds ratios between them were greater than 1 and showed the strong positive
effect of the CBR programme on parents.

Conclusion: The CBR programme not only has a positive effect on children with
Cerebral Palsy, but also plays an important role in parents’ lives. It contributes
in a positive way to parents’ overall activity.

Doly Bokalial has a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from India (affiliated to SNDT Women's University, Mumbai) and a Master's in Rehabilitation Science from Bangladesh (affiliated to Dhaka University). Currently she works as Sr. Coordinator (Early Intervention) at The Association of People with Disability, Bangalore, India. She has six years of experience in disability and rehabilitation and community based rehabilitation.

Md. Forhad Hossain, Jahangir Nagar University, Savar, Dhaka

Dr. Md. Forhad Hossain is a Professor at the Department of Statistics in Jahangirnagar University. He has a PhD in Statistics from The Institute of Statistical Mathematics, The Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Tokyo, Japan. He worked as Pro-Vice Chancellor in Jahangirnagar University and was a Visiting Professor at Ball State University, Munic, Indiana and Visiting Faculty at King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia. He also worked for Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission as a Scientific Officer and has published 26 articles in different international journals. He is highly specialised in fundamental statistics, statistical methodology, applied probability, sampling theories, spatial statistics and interdisciplinary statistics.

N.S. Senthil Kumar, The Association of People with Disability

Dr. N.S Senthil Kumar is working as a Chief Innovation officer at The Association of People with Disability. He holds a PhD in Rehabilitation from University Kebangsaan Malaysia. He has 21 years of experience in the field of rehabilitation across academics, research, innovation, commercialization and research grant writing. He has written in more than 15 international peer-reviewed journals and has four intellectual properties (2 patents & 2 copyrights). He also has authored a book on Biomechanics under Jaypee Brothers (medical book publishers). His areas of interest are clinical rehab, biomechanics, research, innovation and community based rehabilitation.

Shristi Bajracharya, Dhaka University

Shristi Bajracharya has a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Science from Dhaka University and currently works as a Training (Technical) Officer at Handicap International, Nepal. She has more than three years of experience in pediatric rehabilitation, community based rehabilitation and training of government officials, disabled people's organizations and health workers.
